In this section we look at the Chilli opening bids from 1 to 2. Openings from 2 up systemically disturb the auction, so are considered in the disturbed bidding section.

As we play it, Chilli neutral opening bids can be light but never ultra-light or 'bent'. The minimum bids require at least 10 points, and we also use the rule of 20. We use this constructive style even in third hand.

You want to play a little more adventurously than this? There is no fundamental systemic reason why you should not do so, but do come to a clear understanding on how strong your minor relay responses should be if your opening bid can be weak.

In fourth hand, we often use the rule of 15: add the high-card points to the number of spades, and pass unless this number is 15 or more. This minimises the chance of the ignominy of opening in fourth and then conceding a negative score, and on balance wins more than it loses.

Pass, following the rule of 15. Do you really want to concede -110 defending 2, or conceding -50, -100 or -200 saving at three-level?
