Using this extension, if we know that we have a combined high card holding of at least 23 points, the auction becomes ours, and we must either declare or double them.

An auction can become ours in one of the following ways:

  • by going beyond the 1NT barrier when one of us is unlimited in a neutral auction – for example, any two-level new suit response such as 1 2
  • a neutral redouble of a takeout or lead-directing double
  • any 2NT bid other than a minor two-suiter
  • a forcing new suit bid in a disturbed auction
  • a disturbed cue bid
  • a penalty double
  • a penalty pass of a takeout double
  • a fit double, redouble or slam try.

When the auction is ours, then:

  • pass is forcing over their last bid
  • double is penalty in the pass-out seat
  • all other calls retain their normal meaning.
