Chilli does not have many artificial bids, but those that it does have are absolutely forcing, as you would expect.
Some Chilli bids have a constant meaning as bids to play, whatever the auction type:
- 1NT: it may not always be shape suitable or even promise a guard in their suit, but the bidder will not be surprised or distressed if partner passes
- 3NT: partner will need a good reason to pull it
- any slam bid other than a conventional ask or response.
If there is already an agreed trump suit, a slam bid below the agreed trump suit is an alternative slam suggestion. Because of Chilli's suit rules, long suits – especially minors – can often remain suppressed, and this will be the most common reason for making such a suggestion. Another possibility is that, having agreed a major, you now want to suggest playing in a previously undisclosed minor suit fit that may yield an extra trick.
A slam bid above the agreed trump suit is more forceful: 'there is something you do not know about this hand, partner – trust me and pass'.
